Socimag, S.A. was a Spanish manufacturer of magnetic media, based in Barberà del Vallès, Barcelona, operating from approximately 1980.
An order issued by the Spanish Ministry of Economy on March 20, 1984, officially authorized Socimag to operate under a special processing regime for imported raw materials intended for the subsequent export of finished products, including:
cassette shells (*chasis portacintas*); cassette cases; blank audio cassettes (both with and without cases); pre-recorded cassettes; magnetic tape reels; magnetic tape on cores.
By 1988, Socimag was part of the Estudios Gema S.L. – Ortiplas S.A. – Socimag S.A. corporate group. This development stemmed from the rapid growth of the Spanish record label GEMA. During this period, the company also expanded into international markets, actively participating in industry trade shows.
In 1993, Socimag worked on developing magnetic media based on cobalt-doped ferrites and chromium dioxide for digital recording applications compatible with the Digital Compact Cassette (DCC) system. This project was carried out in collaboration with the Department of Fundamental Physics at the Faculty of Physical Sciences in Barcelona.
In 1990, Estudios Gema S.A. registered the trademark ESTUDIOS GEMA for services related to audio and video editing, as well as the production and manufacturing of audio and video cassettes, phonograph records, CDs, and vinyl records.
In 1997, GEMA registered the name G GRUPO GEMA for plastic audio and video cassettes. In 2000, it registered ESTUDIOS GEMA again - this time for CD and DVD cases - and in 2004, it registered GEMA MEDICAL, with magnetic media and plastic products once again included among the goods.
In 2009, a Barcelona court declared Estudios Gema S.A. bankrupt; however, the company did not cease all operations completely until 2021.
